We found that the older lines of gymboree worked well for our child when he was young. They generally snapped all the way open and ran a little shorter or had roll up cuffs so they fit him better than other clothes.

What I have done each beginning of the school year, within the first 7 days, is have a meeting with EVERY teacher, 504 coordinator, nurse, guidance counselor, principal/or assitant principal. At the meeting I distribute information from the OI Foundation website as well as information from the Shriner's Hospital in Montreal. The Shriner's has a published book on OI and a wonderful research team as resources. Also, I inc…

My daughter is 5 and she loves ballet and tap dancing.

Both have done therapeutic horseback riding which increased their spinal bone density almost as much as Pamidronate did.

Are there any types of equipment that were a great find for a child with OI? Have you had any bad experiences with any?

We could not have lived without the Peg Pergo Prima Pappa high chair. It reclines to many different angles, it has a 5 point harness, it is on wheels. I even used it as a stroller/wheelchair at times. Jake is now 8 and we still use it everyday! Well worth the money!

Let the child be as independent as possible. Encourage the child to speak up and ask for what is needed (elevator key, special desk or chair, extra set of books at home, multiple lockers or special location of lockers).

What challenges related to your OI did you encounter in college and how did you overcome them?

I was a Nursing major and was told from the start by my professors that I could not do it because of my OI. I did not let it bother me and I went full steam ahead. Unfortunately the summer before my junior year I had surgery on a herniated disc in my back. The semester that followed, they got me. They put me through the worst time of my life and I ended my semester with a 98% on my final and told the…

I have found that “picker uppers”/“Grabbers” are very handy for a person with OI who wants to be able to do stuff independantly whether it be in their house or even within their bedroom. It has been a great assistant to me over the past year and I can't imagine living without it.

What resources were most helpful in completing your 504 or IEP? What obstacles did you encounter that others should be aware of?

Alyssa has an IEP due mostly to her medical problems. She will not talk in school due to anxiety. The school system is also aware that she does have OI. When she was about 6 months old, she had a minor skull fracture and hematoma (swelling of blood between the skull and the skin). She is also qualified under TBI (tramatic brain injury), which I am not sure if I wa…
